Max    George      Iceman   Yonek    Irving

Horse Max (full name Mad Max) Retired 4/08
Arrival at SWF: 1993
Owner:
SWF/David Palmer
Date of birth: 1985
Breed:
quarter horse/paint
Height & Sex:
16 hand, gelding
Color & Markings:
chestnut, four white socks with trim above hooves, a star & stripe on face.
Experience & Training:
Western, English, dressage, trail riding, jumping and showing

Max has been apart of the family since he was 18 months old. He was trained western by David then converted to english later on. He has won several championships for family members and students, in open showing, dressage, eventing and was part of many drill-team performances. Besides working as a school horse he enjoys going out for a family trail ride. Max is very patient with our beginner horse people when learning groundwork, but he does require at least an intermediate rider when under saddle.

Max is enjoying his semi-retirement. He gets out  a couple times per week for rides to stay in shape and hanging out with his buddies in pasture.

Horse: George (reg. name Sola's Star)
Arrival at SWF: Nov 2005
Owner: Beth Cordell leased by SWF
Date of birth: 1989
Breed: Thoroughbred
Height & Sex: 16.3 hand, gelding
Color & Markings: flea- bitten grey
Experience & Training: race horse, hunter/jumper, dressage and showing

George came to SWF the day after we lost our beloved school horse Lynx to colic. SWF is leasing him from his current owner for use as a school horse in the program. George started his riding career, like many thoroughbreds, as a race horse. After his racing career ended, one of his former owners invested considerable time in training him in the discipline of dressage. Since his arrival at SWF, George has fast become a popular horse among the students. We have found him to be extremely kind with all students. Due to his considerable size, we limit his use to our taller riders.

Horse: Iceman (former name On the Rocks)
Owner: SWF
Arrival at SWF: 2002
Date of birth: Approx. 1989
Breed: Thoroughbred/X
Height & Sex: 16.2 hand, gelding
Color & Markings: flea-bitten gray, x s brand on left quarter
Experience & Training: Western, English, Trail riding, jumping and some eventing

On the way home from our 2002 vacation, we stopped off at a sale barn looking to buy a pony. They were all out of ponies, so I asked about bigger horses. They brought out Ice. He was rather underweight and his tail had been cut very short, but there was something about him that made us go back and buy him. Since then he has been very involved in our riding program, from weekly lessons, to being a great hunter-pace mount, to winning a yearend championship at a local 3-phase in 2004. He does have some quirky habits that make his handler/riders stay on their toes, like attacking the indoor arena mirrors when he trots or canters by them and not appreciating the spay bottles. We have found out he loves cross-country jumping. He is fine for most of our taller riders and can fill in with some of our smaller riders when needed. He is the type of horse that adjusts with the abilities of his handler/rider. We have grown to love him very much so we over look his occasional grumpiness.

Name: Yonek (Reg. name Mommy’s Ruler)
Owner: Patricia Carnegie/ Leased by SWF
Arrival at SWF: 1999
Date of Birth: 1984
Breed: Thoroughbred
Height & Sex: 16.2 hand, gelding
Color & Markings: Blood bay, a star and a snip
Experience & Training: race horse, dressage, jumping and showing

Before Yonek came to SWF he was a race horse for many years and he had remained a stallion until he was ten years old. He was brought to SWF by one of our former Instructors. He was extremely bothered and couldn’t be comfortable with himself. He spent most of his time ringing is head up and down or pacing back and forth in his stall or paddock. He was also plagued with lameness trouble in one of his hooves. He was very limited with his mental and physical soundness. Fortunately for him Patty bought him in 2002 and has worked wonders with him through groundwork and roundpen training. He became much more relaxed and is now one of our steadiest horses. He has been involved in our drill teams he has competed at some local dressage shows and has learned to jump. Patty also enjoys taking him for trail rides. At first only our most experienced handler/riders could work with him but now he is well behaved for our intermediate riders too.

Name: Irving (reg. name The Veteran)
Owners: Jennifer Genet & Lorna Lynch /leased by SWF,
Arrived at SWF:1994.
Height & Sex: 14.3 hand gelding
Date of Birth: March 1979
Color & Markings: dark bay , a few white hairs on forehead
Breed: Quarter horse.
Experience/Training: Western, English, Dressage, Drillteam, trail riding and showing.

We have been very fortunate to lease Irving from his owners for many years. They still enjoy their regular visits and rides with him. Irving is known to everyone as the cute horse; he has a beautiful full tail and a dappled coat in the summer. Over the years he has developed quite the fan club as one of our favorite horses because of his fun personality. He is known for some of his quirky habits too. Everyone quickly learns to watch out for his dancing feet while grooming him and when he is in his stall he likes to sway back and forth. We have nick-named him “Swirvin’ Irvin’ ”. During our long relationship with Irving he has had many, many competitive successes. Such as being a part of many drill team performances and winning yearend championships in dressage with a couple students. These days Irving has slowed down some and is now one of our best beginner mounts. Everyone agrees he has a wonderful canter to learn on.

... And Our Ponies
Micheal   Jelly Bean   Fancy   Stella   Miss Maggie

Name: Micheal

Michael or Mikey as we call him has only been with us for a short time but has already become a favorite with the students. His owner has had him since he was very young. He knows how to drive and she did a lot of dressage training with him too.  She since has several other horses to work so needed a home for Mikey.  So far he has done well with our Beginner to Intermediate riders.

Name: Jelly Bean
Owner: Adri Kerr

Height & Sex 12.1 hand mare
Date of Birth: 4/5/99
Color & markings:  Chestnut with roaning on sides.   White face and stockings on front legs.
Breed:  pony
Experience/training: Leadline, beginner lessons

Jelly has the reputation of being one of the cutest critters on the property and is excelling in her job.  Jelly is still  working with Adri as her leadline pony.  Jelly Bean has worked her way into the regular lesson program doing lessons with everyone small enough to ride her and some a bit too big.  She  really enjoys jumping and is one of the most comfortable ponies for bareback rides.

Name: Stella (full name Celtic Constellation)
Owner: SWF
Arrival at SWF: Spring 2004
Height & Sex: 13.3 hand mare
Date of Birth: 1997
Color & Markings:  Dapple grey,  black legs and a little black dot on her nose
Breed: Connemara pony
Experience: English, Jumping

We bought Stella in from a family in Douglas whose daughter had lost interest in riding. Stella was living in their back yard with turkeys, a goat that had eaten her tail off and a pair of peacocks. She was a little out of shape and needed to trust people more but we could see she would be a benefit to the program. After letting her spend a few months getting back into shape and learning to trust people, we started to let some of our more experienced riders work with her. She progressed well throughout the summer and competed successfully in last fall's student show. Now that her tail has grown back and she has filled out, she is quite the pretty pony and works well with most of our students.

Name: Fancy (full name Fancy That)

Color & Markings: flaxen chestnut, blaze and one stocking on left hind leg

When we were looking for a larger pony or small horse for the riding program, our hay dealer informed us he had a nice pony for sale and offered to bring us Fancy for a one week trial. When she arrived she was very chubby and shaggy from living with a herd of cows in upper state New York for over a year. We found out soon after she arrived that she was a few years younger than what we originally were told. She was supposed to be 6 to 8 years old when in fact she was only four years. Although she wasn’t quite what we expected we soon fell in love with her and she became Samantha’s new pony, and after a short time was working in the riding program too. She has successfully competed at her first dressage show last summer and has learned to jump. Our intermediate riders bring out the best in her.
